Dealing with Diabetes
Well, the title says it all....
I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It all came about when back in December when we were expecting twins. I went to see my insurance agent to make some changes in my life insurance and that involves taking a blood test and other things. Long story short, the test came back positive. I was in denial for a while, also scared for a while because this is not something to take lightly. I talked with several people and they advised me to get re-tested. I talked to my Dr and was re-tested on March 8th. The test results came back better than the first test done in February, which gave me some hope because when I first got the news I immediately started watching my diet and exercising everyday except Sunday.
Right now, the Dr. has determined that I do not need any medication, but that I need to control this through diet and exercise. I think the biggest problem that I have had was not necessarily my diet, but rather the ever present reality that I was not getting any exercise.
My message is simple to everyone, especially those who may be in seminary and burning the candle at both ends.
1) Eat right
2) Get some exercise - this is important, you may think you are too busy, but this is crucial
for your health and well-being
3) Get enough sleep
I have been testing my blood glucose levels for almost a week now and will see a diabetes educator on Monday. I am feeling okay, I never really felt bad, but I think that all of the stress from January along with a bad diet and no exercise and lots of stress may have been a contributing factor.
Life is different when you have been given such a diagnosis, but I am confident that God is using this to make me aware that taking care of my body (I Cor. 6:19) is a form of stewardship.
